The PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) is a medical imaging technology which provides economical storage and convenient access to images from multiple modalities.

The RIS (Radiology Information System) is a networked software system for managing medical imagery and associated data.

The application of the system means the patients would spend less time in waiting to get their diagnostics and reports.

Dr Charles Massambu, Assistant Director of Diagnostics Services Department of Curative Services in the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children graced the launching of the system this week, saying the move shows better public-private partnership in health sector.

During the launching, Dr Massambu said the system plays significant role in improving the patient care and safety.

He further called on strengthened public-private partnership in order to achieve a common goal in serving the population with better health services.

The Chief Operating Officer of the AKHS, Mr Sisawo Konteh stated: “the introduction of the first and only fully fledged PACS/ RIS system will play a great role in delivering quality services to the Tanzanian population in the most efficient and effective way.”

With the deployment of this system, a variety of multidisciplinary imaging such as X’ray, Ultrasound, Mammography, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Cath lab, and so on will be available at the selection of a click or two emulating a seamless workflow visualising the images and report in the same viewing window with the utmost efficiency
