The former Miss Tanzania said before the court that she has not been involved in any business relating to dealing with illicit drugs. This revelation was made at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam yesterday during the drugs abuse trial of Wema and her two house girls, Angelina Msigwa and Matrida Abas.
Before Principal Resident Magistrate Thomas Simba, a prosecution witness WP Marry narrated that on February 4, 2017, while at the Central Police Station she was summoned by her boss for direction.
Led by State Attorney Constantine Kakula, for the prosecution, the witness explained that she was directed to take Wema from the lockup and escort her to her house at Bunju areas in Kinondoni District to facilitate searching exercise at her home.
The witness said that she was accompanied with four other police officers. While on the way inside the police vehicle, the police officer went on, Wema, who is the former Miss Tanzania, confessed that though she has never been dealing in illicit drugs, she had been using bhang for leisure.
The third prosecution witness told the court further that upon reaching at Wema’s house, they found two house girls, but before conducting the search they invited the ten cell leader of the area to act as an independent witness.
Wema also invited her sister to be around during the search. Thereafter, the search exercise was conducted where some bhang substances were allegedly impounded. They include one roll of substances suspected to be bhang inside the cupboard.
One piece of the suspected drugs, according to the witness, was also found left in the window in Wema’s bedroom, while another piece was found in a draw in the house maids’ bedroom.
She said that they could not recover anything at the sitting room. After the search session, she testified, they recorded the impounded substances in the certificate of seizure. The witness disclosed further that on February 8, 2017 she took Wema to the Chief Government Chemist for urinary tests.
When cross-examined by advocate Albert Msando, for the accused persons, the witness admitted that none of the two house girls were found with the narcotic drugs and that she did not take Wema to the Justice of Peace having confessed to have been using bhang.
In the trial, the prosecution alleges that the accused persons committed the offence on February 2, 2017, at their residential house at Kunduchi-Ununio in Kinondoni District. The prosecution claims that on the material day and the areas, jointly and together, the accused persons were found in unlawful possession of one roll and two small pieces of cannabis sativa, commonly known as bhang weighing 1.08 grammes.
