The system is aimed at increasing the number of students for the E-Learning programme which is a partnership between Airtel and VETA. Under the new system, a student will be required to pay a deposit of 60,000/- and pay the rest before the start of practical sessions.

Earlier, a student was required to pay the full amount of 120,000/- once he registers for any course. Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Airtel Tanzania Director of Communications Beatrice Singano Mallya said that since the launch of VSOMO programme two years ago, the programme has been successful where a high number of Tanzanians have been registering for the programme.

“VSOMO App has been a success since its launch. However, we have been experiencing a little bit challenge where some students have been unable to pay the full 120,000/- before they start their studies as per requirement. For that reason, Airtel and VETA have decided to come with a new payment structure where a student can pay 60,000/- during registration and pay the balance before the kick of practical session,” she said.

VETA Kipawa Principal Sospeter Dickson Mkasanga said that so far 105 students have already completed their studies through the VSOMO App and among them, 36 are carrying practical sessions on different VETA centres in the country. Those who have completed their studies have been awarded with certificates.

“To us VETA, this is a big milestone as our idea is to make many Tanzanians acquire vocational skills,” he said. Mkasanga added that over 10,000 students have registered for the VSOMO App but could not start their studies because they could not pay the full fees upfront.

He said that VSOMO App offers 13 courses which includes, Motorcycle Mechanics, Electrical Installation, Mobile Phone Technician, Cosmetology, Welding and Metal Fabrication, Aluminum and Upvc Architectural Structure, Cake Baking and Decoration, Catering and Food Service Techniques, PC Maintenance, Industrial Electrical Installation, Domestic Plumbing and Auto-electric.
