Officially graced by Zanzibar Urban West’s Regional Commissioner, Ayub Mohamed Mahmoud over the weekend the launch was well attended by youth, sports teachers and officials from all schools in the Isles.

Addressing participants at Amaan Karume grounds, the regional commissioner said the revolutionary government of Zanzibar gives sports the utmost priority on account that, among other things sports tend to bring the youth together and build unity.

He called on stakeholders to provide support in Umisseta sports especially at the grassroots level, thanking Coca- Cola for sponsoring the competitions and pledging that the revolutionary government of Zanzibar will put more efforts in supporting sports in schools so that many students get to participate.

Speaking of sports kit that sponsor Coca-Cola gives to schools, Mahmoud urged teachers to use them appropriately as per the intended goal.

“The government through its development programme is geared to promote sports in the isles.

The programme that goes as ‘Sports 55’ aims to support stakeholders’ efforts to promote sports in secondary schools and ensure that talents are discovered and nurtured to the international level,” he said.

Adding, the Coco- Cola Zanzibar’s Director of Communications and External Affairs, Haji Mzee Ally said through this sponsorship Coca- Cola makes sure that all students who participate in the sports competitions are given quality sports kit.

“Coca-Cola has been sponsoring Copa Umisseta Games for three years now with an intention to develop sporting talents from the grassroots level. We believe that apart from health benefits, sports also provide opportunity to improve athletes’ economic status.

We are positive that through these competitions, more talents will be discovered for instance many soccer players in our Zanzibar Heroes team were discovered from Umisseta games,” said Ally. Coca-Cola distributed sports kit to various schools that were present at the launch event.

The same sports kit will be distributed to 4,000 secondary schools countrywide.

The launch of Copa Umisseta in Zanzibar is the third after previous launches held in Dodoma and Tanga.

At the national level, the launch of Copa Umisseta will take place in Mwanza in June this year.
