The City’s Sports and Culture Officer, Benson Maneno said the idea was hatched by the Arusha City Director, Athumani Kihamia and the District Commissioner, Gabriel Daqarro and the soccer events kick off today, April 2, with its climax slated for April 26th during the Union day celebrations here.
The league styled competition divided in four categories, will be played on ‘Home and Away,’ basis on respective teams’ grounds, because each squad plays from a particular ward and there are 25 teams. In Group A fixture there are Moshono, Baraa, Moivaro, Kimandolu and Olorien.
Group B teams include Daraja II, Engutoto, Themi, Lemara, Mjini-Kati, Kaloleni and Sekei while Group C’ will feature, Sinon, Sokon One, Terrat, Muriet, Osunyai and Unga-Limited. Teams in Group D are Olasiti, Olmoti, Sombetini, Elerai, Sakina, Ngarenaro and Levolosi.
The four whistle blowing matches will see Moshono facing Baraa; Daraja II will face Engutoto, Sinoni against Sokon One and Olasiti will be locking horns with Olmoti in the evening. The final match will be staged at Sheikh Amri Abeid, including the preceding quarters and semis.
The overall winning team stands to get 2m/- and a trophy; the second winner will pocket 1m/- and the third 500,000/-. Most disciplined team will also be awarded 500,000/- while the best player stands to pocket 200,000/-. Plans are underway to include other sports in later years.
“From next year, we intend to bring aboard, athletics netball, basketball, tug of war and other types of sports in order to ensure the participation of more people,” Sports Officer Maneno maintained
