CECAFA casts hopes on twelve teams

The number of CECAFA entries makes about 19 per cent of 64 African teams that have qualified for CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup’s best of 16 stage.

CECAFA has six teams out of 32 teams in the Champions League while the zone has other six teams out of 32 in Confederation Cup. Sudan has remained with threteams after the exit of El Mereikh, who were beaten by Township Rollers at the Preliminary stage.

Sudan has one team at CAF Champions League discipline and two teams at the Confederation Cup. Tanzania, Rwanda and Ethiopia have managed to enter two teams each while Kenya, Burundi and Uganda have each entered one team.

Zanzibar whose two envoys JKU and Zimamoto lost their preliminary matches to Zesco and Wolaita Dicha respectively has no team at this stage and so are Burundi, South Sudan and Somalia. The six teams that qualified for the round 16 of the CAF Champions League are Young Africans (Tanzania), KCCA (Uganda), Gor Mahia (Kenya), St George (Ethiopia), El Hilal (Sudan) and Rayon Sports (Rwanda).

East and Central African zone has five teams at the Confederation Cup. The five teams represent Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Burundi and Sudan. The teams are Simba (Tanzania) APR (Rwanda), Hilal Obeid and Ahly Shandy (Sudan) while Wolaitta Dicha who eliminated Zimamoto of Zanzibar is the fifth team.

The Round 16 will be held on March 6 to 7 with Saint George of Ethiopia hosting KCCA of Uganda in Addis Ababa. Tanzanian envoys Young Africans will host Township Rollers of Botswana while Kenyan giants, Gor Mahia will host Esperance of Tunisia in
